Background checks and SafeSport for youth clubs

Start with your governing body. Requirements depend on who your club is affiliated with. Clubs under a national governing body may be covered by the U.S. Center for SafeSport Code and the Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017, which include abuse-prevention training and reporting duties. Your league or state association sets background-check rules. Read their current policy first.
1. List every adult with access to minors. Coaches, assistants, team managers, regular drivers and volunteers who supervise.
2. Record what each role needs. Background check, abuse-prevention training, concussion training, and their renewal frequency.
3. Track expiry dates, not just completion. Most problems come from a clearance that lapsed mid-season.
4. Set a simple rule. No current clearance, no unsupervised access to players. Apply it to everyone, including long-time volunteers.
5. Keep the documents private. Store dates and status; restrict who can see the documents themselves.
SportEscudo tracks each coach's clearances and warns the board before one expires.
